Biography
Avery Sanderlin, Baritone, is an opera singer and chorister based in Denton, Texas. His passion for music began in piano lessons in elementary school, and continued to grow as he joined band in the sixth grade, playing bassoon and later percussion. His interest in singing, however, began in high school, where he joined Glenda Dawson High School’s Encore Choir and Ovation Theater. His repertoire extends across a variety of periods and styles, ranging from intimate recitals to large-scale works with the symphony orchestra.
As a soloist, Avery has performed in concerts and recitals at Duke Chapel, the Church of the Incarnation, the Winspear Concert Hall, and the Denton Women’s Club, among others. He has programmed and presented two solo recitals, which included art song selections by Charles Ives, Lori Laitman, John Woods Duke, and Reynaldo Hahn. He has performed as a soloist in several of Bach’s Cantatas, as well as Bach’s Johannespassion. He has performed as a soloist in several major works including Requiem in D Minor (Fauré), Krönungsmesse (Mozart), and Rejoice in the Lamb (Britten), as well as selections from Elijah (Mendelssohn) and Five Mystical Songs (Vaughan Williams).
On the operatic stage, he has performed roles in Don Giovanni (Leporello) with LAH-SOW Philadelphia, Tosca (Sciarrone) with the UNT Symphony Orchestra, Die Fledermaus (Dr. Falke) with Music On Site, and Dido and Aeneas (Aeneas) with the Fillmore Opera Studio. He has also performed in several productions with UNT Opera, including La Rondine (Rambaldo), Carmen (Zuniga), and Le Nozze di Figaro (Antonio), as well as covering the role of Pandolfe in Massenet’s Cendrillon.
As a choral and chamber musician, has performed with several professional choirs including the Verdigris Ensemble, Incarnatus, the Highland Park Chorale, and numerous project choirs, including the North Texas premiere of The Sacred Veil (Whitacre) and the world premiere of Requiem for a Poisoned Earth (Mooney).
Avery holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of North Texas, where he studied under the guidance of Dr. Carol Wilson. He is also an alumnus of the ChorWorks Young Artist Program (2023), and a current member of The Dallas Opera’s Education Studio.
