Biography
Avery Sanderlin, baritone, is a performer and collaborator whose work spans opera, oratorio, art song, and chamber repertoire. An avid musician since the age of 8, he strives to utilize classical music as a means of fostering community and connection.
On the operatic stage, Avery has displayed versatility across a range of comedic and dramatic roles. He has appeared in Sweeney Todd (Ensemble) with CCM Opera, Don Giovanni (Leporello) with the Luke A. Housner Summer Opera Workshop, Tosca (Sciarrone) with the UNT Symphony Orchestra, La Rondine (Rambaldo) with UNT Opera, Die Fledermaus (Dr. Falke) with Music On Site, and Dido and Aeneas (Aeneas) with the Fillmore Opera Studio.
On the concert stage, Avery exhibits a strong affinity for music of the Baroque period, appearing as a soloist in Caldara’s Missa Dolorosa with CCM Chamber Singers, Handel’s Messiah with the St. Peter in Chains Cathedral-Basilica Choir, Bach’s Johannespassion (BWV 245) with Incarnatus, and Johan Helmich Roman’s Jubilate with the UNT Baroque Orchestra and Vox Aquilae. He has also performed many of Bach’s cantatas, including Christ lag in Todesbanden (BWV 4), Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (BWV 80), Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit (BWV 106), and Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich (BWV 150). Additional engagements include solo appearances in Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass with Yellow Springs Community Music, Fauré’s Requiem in D Minor, Mozart’s Krönungsmesse, and Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb with the Church of the Incarnation Choir.
As a choral musician, Avery holds positions on the rosters of Ensemble con Fuoco, the Verdigris Ensemble, Incarnatus, and the Orpheus Chamber Singers. He has sung many masterworks including Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, Poulenc’s Gloria, Whitacre’s The Sacred Veil, and the world premiere of Mooney’s Requiem for a Poisoned Earth.
This summer, Avery will appear as a Studio Artist with Opera Neo in San Diego, California, where he will cover the roles of Wagner in Louise Bertin’s Fausto and Prosdocimo in Rossini’s Il turco in Italia in addition to appearing in the chorus of both productions. Additionally, he will appear as a featured artist in Opera Neo’s Aria Gala and A Night at the Museum, a semi-staged song recital.
Avery holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of North Texas, where he studied under the guidance of Dr. Carol Wilson, and is an alumnus of OPERA San Antonio’s Apprentice Artist program and The Dallas Opera’s Education Studio. He is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati under the guidance of Kenneth Shaw.
